Nevzat Bahtiyar’s detention will continue: Court Rejects Appeal

Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court rejected the objection to the detention of Nevzat Bahtiyar, who is on trial in the case related to the murder of 8-year-old Narin Güran in Diyarbakır. After considering the appeal, the court ruled that the verdict was in accordance with the procedure and the law.

The Legal Process After the Murder
The lifeless body of Narin Güran, who went missing on August 21 in Tavşantepe neighborhood of Bağlar district, was found in a sack in a stream bed 19 days later. In the investigation launched after this tragic incident, 12 people were arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident. Among those arrested were Narin Güran’s family and her neighbor Nevzat Bahtiyar.

Aggravated Life Sentences for the Defendants
The indictment stated that the defendants committed the murder “in complicity” and demanded aggravated life imprisonment. The first hearing of the case was held on November 7 and it was decided to continue the detention of all defendants. In the second hearing held on December 26-28, Salim, Enes and Yüksel Güran were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, while Nevzat Bahtiyar was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months for “destroying, concealing or altering evidence of a crime”.

Detention Appeal Rejected
Nevzat Bahtiyar’s lawyers submitted an objection petition to the court, claiming that their client was innocent and demanding his release. However, Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court rejected the objection, noting that the decision was in accordance with the procedure and the law. With this decision, Nevzat Bahtiyar’s detention will continue.

Reasons for the Court Decision
The court emphasized that there were still grounds for the defendants’ detention and that there was a suspicion of flight. It was also stated that the incident was socially sensitive and the continuation of detention was important for the protection of evidence.
