Chip ID cards, which were introduced in Turkey in 2016, provided convenience in many areas with their secure and fast transaction capacity. These new ID cards, which are actively used in areas such as banking, healthcare and taxation, will also be mandatory in land registry transactions as of January 1, 2025.
Time to Say Goodbye to Old ID Cards
According to the statement made by the General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, as of January 1, 2025, only chip ID cards can be used in land registry transactions. Old type identity cards will no longer be valid in these transactions.
Chip ID cards, which work with the Electronic Identity Verification System (EKDS), will prevent forgery in title deed transactions and make transactions more reliable. Thanks to this system, critical transactions such as title deed purchases and sales, inheritance transactions and transfers will be carried out faster and more securely.
Fraud and victimization will be prevented
New identity cards will prevent citizens from being victimized by preventing forgery. By ending the use of old-type IDs in land registry transactions, strong protection will be provided against fraud and document forgery. Officials announced that citizens should renew their IDs until December 31, 2024 to avoid victimization.
In addition, with the use of chip IDs, every transaction will be digitally recorded. This will facilitate the follow-up of transactions and make the protection of property rights more reliable.
How to Change Identity?
Citizens who want to renew their ID cards can apply to the Provincial Directorates of Population and Citizenship, or they can easily make an appointment through the e-Government system. The documents required for identity change include the current identity card, biometric photograph and a document showing that the application fee has been paid.
During the application process, fingerprints and biometric data of citizens are also recorded to ensure the highest level of security for ID cards.
Digital Transformation and Security at the Forefront
The widespread use of chip ID cards is seen as an important part of Turkey’s digital transformation process. Thanks to the electronic verification system, only the identity card holder can carry out transactions and unauthorized access is prevented.
While this system provides two-way security in real estate transactions, it is considered as an important step to prevent fraud with fake documents.
Application Deadline Approaching
Chip ID cards to be used in land registry transactions have become mandatory, making it imperative for citizens to apply on time. Those who have not yet changed their ID cards must complete their applications by December 31, 2024. Otherwise, they will not be able to make transactions with their old ID cards.
