Hamas Warning from the US to Turkey: Is a New Era Beginning?

The US State Department is preparing to send an important message regarding relations between Turkey and Hamas. Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced that the US will send a clear message to NATO member Turkey that things can no longer be conducted with Hamas in the same way as before. This warning is seen as a signal of a new tension in US-Turkey relations.

“Hamas Leaders Should Not Live a Comfortable Life”
Matthew Miller emphasized that Hamas leaders should not live a comfortable life in any country. Stating that the US is sending the same message not only to Turkey but also to all countries of the world on this issue, Miller said that there are legal proceedings against some Hamas leaders and that extradition of these people is demanded.

Israeli Press: “Hamas Moves to Ankara”
Israel’s Times of Israel newspaper, citing an unnamed Arab diplomat, claimed that Hamas leadership had moved from Qatar to Turkey. These allegations were denied by Turkish diplomatic sources, who said that Hamas leaders had only visited Turkey.

Hamas and Qatar Deny the Allegations
Hamas officials said the allegations in the Israeli press did not reflect the truth. Qatar, for its part, said that no demands had been made to Hamas leaders to leave the country. These statements show that the parties have maintained their positions, but speculation continues to increase internationally.

Turkey’s stance towards Hamas
Unlike the US and Israel, Turkey does not define Hamas as a terrorist organization. Turkey considers Hamas as a political actor in Palestine and holds talks in this context. However, recent statements by the US on this issue are expected to create a new tension between Ankara and Washington.

Although there have been many crisis points in the history of Turkish-American relations, it is foreseen that this move on Hamas could further complicate the cooperation between the two countries. Washington’s insistence on this issue may be an important factor that will determine how Turkey will respond in its foreign policy.

The US Approach to Hamas
The United States officially designates Hamas as a terrorist organization and imposes sanctions on all actors that support its activities. Washington opposes the relocation of Hamas leaders to other countries to continue its operations, considering this a threat to international security.

New Front in Turkey-US Tensions
These US statements make it clear that Turkey is demanding a change in its relations with Hamas. However, it remains to be seen how Turkey will respond to this call and whether it will reassess its relations with Hamas.
