Minimum Wage Negotiations Begin for Millions of Workers

The countdown has begun for the eagerly awaited process regarding the minimum wage increase. The minimum wage hike negotiations, which directly concern approximately 7 million workers in Turkey, will begin in December under the leadership of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. These talks, which will witness an intense negotiation process between employees and employers, stand out as the platform where the most important decisions affecting living standards will be taken.

Explanations from Minister Işıkhan on the Process
Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Isikhan briefed the press after the recent Cabinet meeting on the minimum wage negotiations. The Minister stated that the negotiations will follow last year’s process and pointed out that they will start in the first or second week of December.

Işıkhan said, “We will carry out the process like last year. We will come together with the parties in the first or second week of December. We are ready. We will announce the process when the minimum wage schedule is clear,” he said, outlining a clear framework for the negotiations.

Importance of the Talks
The minimum wage set each year is of great importance not only for employees, but also for employers and the overall economic balance. High inflation, rising living costs and economic volatility mean that this year’s negotiations will be more challenging. Employees will expect a higher pay raise in the face of the rising cost of living, while employers will strive to balance the burden of economic conditions on their businesses.

Past Processes
Last year, the parties came to the table in December and the new minimum wage was announced after intense negotiations. The Minimum Wage Determination Commission, consisting of labor, employer and government representatives, held a series of meetings to find a common ground. A similar process is expected to take place this year.

Employee and Public Expectations
Millions of workers and their families are eagerly awaiting the outcome of these negotiations. The new wage level will not only affect workers’ incomes, but also consumption expenditures and economic activity. The public demands a raise that will protect the purchasing power of employees, especially in the face of rising inflation.

Employers’ Expectations
The employer side, on the other hand, believes that the increase should not threaten economic sustainability. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in particular, want government support to continue against rising personnel costs.

Calendar and Expectations
The negotiations, which will start in December, are expected to be finalized by the end of the month. The new minimum wage rate is planned to enter into force as of January 2025. Maintaining the balance between employees and employers, ensuring the satisfaction of the parties and observing the dynamics of the country’s economy will be among the most critical points of this process.
