Shocking Defenses in the Newborn Trial: “We intervened with the baby, the doctor did not come”
In the Yenidoğan Gang case, which is on trial for allegedly causing infant deaths in neonatal intensive care units in exchange for money, the defense of the defendants continues. The case has both caused a wide public outcry and is progressing with chilling details. After Fırat Sarı, the alleged gang leader, and 21 other arrested defendants, the testimonies of the defendant nurse Ecem Koç drew attention.
Alleged Doctor Shortage in Baby’s Death
Taking the floor at the hearing, nurse Ecem Koç responded to the allegations regarding the death of baby Halime. “The baby was in a very bad condition, she was intubated and her blood vessels were exhausted. Since there was no doctor, we, as nurses, did the intervention,” Koç defended herself, stating that they did everything they could, but the baby could not be saved. Stating that they applied CPR and adrenaline, Koç said that the incident was the first time they had encountered such a situation.
Striking Findings: “Dopamine was given through the head”
Explaining about the drugs administered to the baby, Koç said, “Dopamine is not usually given through the head because it is a drug that damages the vessels. But there was no other vascular access,” he said. In his defense, he also stated that Fırat Sarı, who is alleged to be the gang leader, showed an approach to this situation as “There is no need for CPR, because the brain sequelae remained”.
“Money Traffic Only for Goods”
Koç also responded to the allegations of money traffic between him and Fırat Sarı. “I bought clothes for Fırat Hoca, he returned the money. I bought furniture for a baby, which was paid for. There was no commercial relationship,” he defended himself.
Defense of Dr. Mehmet Salih Kara
Another person who testified at the hearing was Dr. Mehmet Salih Kara, the defendant without arrest. Kara stated that he had already made his defense and had nothing to add, and rejected the allegation that he used other people’s stamps. “It is not possible for me to do such a thing due to my busy schedule,” Kara said, flatly denying the accusations.
Shocking Details from the Courtroom
The phone calls listened to during the hearing also provided striking information about the activities of the gang. The conversations of Fırat Sarı and Bahar nurse saying, “Don’t give dopamine through his head, if he will live, he will live” were presented to the court. While confirming this conversation, Koç explained all the details of the interventions made to the baby.
“We struggled but it was not enough”
Stating in his defense that he had no connection to the organization, Koç said, “I was just doing my duty, I have nothing to do with the organization. I did everything I could for baby Halime but it didn’t work out,” he said, denying the charges.
Course of the Case
In the Neonatal Gang trial, the defense will be followed by the examination of other evidence. As a result of this case, which has caused widespread public outcry, the responsibilities of nurses, doctors and other health workers will be comprehensively evaluated.
