Striking Messages on the Struggle of Meskhetian Turks and Human Rights
In his video message to the 2nd International Symposium on the Legal and Social Problems of Meskhetian Turks, Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun drew attention to both the historical difficulties faced by Meskhetian Turks and the double standards of the international community on human rights. Altun criticized the worldwide silence against the violations suffered by Muslim communities and emphasized Turkey’s resolute stance on this issue.
History of Meskhetian Turks and Turkey’s Support
Referring to the tragic story of Meskhetian Turks, which started with their exile 80 years ago, Altun praised the determination of this community to preserve their identity and culture. He stated that Turkey has taken important steps in the search for solutions to the problems of Meskhetian Turks.
Citizenship and Housing: Since 2002, Turkey has granted citizenship to more than 70,000 Meskhetian Turks and provided housing to this community.
Protection of Rights: Turkey continues its struggle on international platforms for the return of Meskhetian Turks to their homeland and the protection of their rights.
Harsh Criticism on Double Standards
Altun criticized the international community and human rights defenders for remaining silent when it comes to the rights of Muslim communities. “The silence in the face of deportations and genocides in regions such as Meskhetia, Khojaly, Bosnia and Gaza is unacceptable,” Altun said, emphasizing the importance of Turkey’s resolute stance on this issue.
Turkey’s Human Rights Struggle
Stating that Turkey, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, calls for justice against human rights violations, Altun said the country works to protect the rights of victimized communities both regionally and globally. He said that the efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of Meskhetian Turks and transfer it to future generations are also part of this effort.
Future Goals for Meskhetian Turks
Turkey will continue its initiatives at both national and international level to protect the rights and improve the living standards of Meskhetian Turks. Altun called for solidarity and unity in line with this goal, once again demonstrating Turkey’s leadership role.
