Turkey on the Road to Energy Independence: Record Support and Major Expansion in Exports

Record Support and Domestic Production Breakthrough in the Energy Sector

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar evaluated Turkey’s achievements in the energy sector and its future targets. Speaking at the TBMM Plan and Budget Commission, Bayraktar announced that a total of 275 billion TL of state support will be provided for electricity and natural gas bills in 2024. Stating that the steps taken in line with Turkey’s energy independence goals are bearing fruit, the Minister drew attention to the future potential of the energy sector.

Significant Increase in Domestic Natural Gas Production
Bayraktar stated that Turkey’s daily natural gas production has reached 8 million cubic meters and this capacity meets the needs of 3.5 million households. Stating that the natural gas extracted in Sakarya Gas Field contributes greatly to the national economy, the Minister announced that daily production will be increased to 20 million cubic meters thanks to the floating production platform that will be commissioned by 2026.

Energy Investments and Mining Activities
Explaining that efforts to reduce dependence on energy imports continue unabated, Bayraktar said that a record was broken with 57 thousand barrels of oil production per day in the Gabar region. Stating that a total of 143 drillings are targeted in 2025, the Minister emphasized that Turkey maintains its global leadership in boron mining and exports in this field are targeted at 1.3 billion dollars in 2024.

Expansion in Natural Gas Exports
Stating that Turkey has become a regional player in natural gas exports, Minister Bayraktar said that gas is exported to countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Romania and Serbia. Emphasizing that Turkey aims to become a central country in energy trade, the Minister said that the natural gas storage capacity will be increased to 12 billion cubic meters in 2028, which will make significant contributions to supply security.

Future Targets in the Energy Sector
Minister Bayraktar stated that investments will continue to increase Turkey’s domestic energy production and ensure energy independence. Noting that carbon emissions will be reduced through investments in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy, the Minister said that employment and economic growth will continue to be supported in the energy sector.

Turkey’s Energy Vision
The Ministry aims to make the energy sector more competitive and sustainable. In this context, increasing domestic production and renewable energy investments will play a critical role in achieving Turkey’s economic and environmental goals.
