Turkey’s Rise in Global Relations: BRICS and New Economic Steps
Turkey continues to take strategic steps to increase its influence on the global stage. Minister of Trade Ömer Bolat made important statements on Turkey’s international cooperation, BRICS membership, trade relations with Israel and combating exorbitant prices in a television program he attended.
Customs Union is Being Updated
Minister Bolat touched upon the ongoing Customs Union update talks with the European Union and stated that this step would increase Turkey’s trade volume. Emphasizing that a stronger place would be gained in the European market with the update of the Customs Union, Bolat stated that the process was progressing positively. “We believe that when our trade with the EU is updated, our commercial activities will accelerate even more,” he said.
What Does BRICS Membership Mean for Turkey?
A joint membership offer for Turkey on the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) platform is on the agenda. Minister Bolat stated that this offer presents an important opportunity for Turkey. Bolat, who stated that BRICS is a strong economic cooperation structure that represents the East-West polarization in the global economy, emphasized that Turkey’s participation in this platform will expand the international cooperation network.
“Participation in BRICS will allow Turkey to gain a wider place in the world economy,” said Bolat, and expressed that this step will strengthen Turkey’s global economic policies.
Stopping Trade with Israel
Also touching on the developments following Turkey’s decision to stop trade with Israel, Bolat stated that this decision was the result of a humanitarian stance. Stating that Turkey has gradually reduced its commercial activities in the face of Israel’s increasing attacks on Palestine, Bolat said, “Our support for the health aid and the supply of products needed by the Palestinian people continues.” Bolat also emphasized that Israel reacted during this process, but Turkey took steps by prioritizing human rights.
Combating Exorbitant Prices
Comprehensive steps are also being taken regarding the price increases experienced in Turkey’s domestic market. Minister Bolat stated that the control and regulation mechanisms against exorbitant price increases have been strengthened. Bolat, who said, “We are developing various strategies to ensure balance in the economy,” said that market regulations will yield positive results in the upcoming period.
Turkey’s Global Role is Strengthening
The steps taken by Turkey in both domestic and foreign policy are part of the country’s goal of strengthening its role on the global stage. Moves such as the updating of the Customs Union and BRICS membership aim to increase Turkey’s influence in the world economy. At the same time, the commercial decisions taken against Israel while protecting human values show that Turkey is following a sensitive policy in the international arena.
